Shimla in January: Snowfall Guide, Weather & Trip Plan

January is the coldest month in Shimla and the month most travellers pick for snow. Snowfall is never guaranteed on a fixed date, but late December to February is when Shimla and the higher spots around it (Kufri, Fagu, Narkanda) are most likely to get it.

Does it Snow in Shimla in January

Usually yes, at least a few times in the month, but the exact days change every year. Shimla town (around 2,200 m) gets lighter, shorter spells. Kufri (about 16 km away) and Narkanda (about 60 km away) sit higher and hold snow for longer, so even when Shimla town is clear, you can often find snow there.

Tip: keep 1 flexible day in your plan. If fresh snow is forecast, we move your Kufri or Narkanda day to match it.

Shimla Weather in January

  • Days: cold and often sunny, roughly 5–10°C
  • Nights: around or below 0°C
  • After a snowfall: icy roads in the morning, clear blue skies after

Fagu (~22 km): quieter than Kufri, wide snowy slopes.
