Sissu in Winter (Dec–Feb): Snow, Atal Tunnel & Travel Guide

Sissu, in the Lahaul valley just past the north end of the Atal Tunnel, is one of the easiest places to see deep snow from Manali in winter. From December to February the village, the river bed and the waterfall above it are usually white.

What Makes Sissu Special in Winter

  • Deep snow while Manali town may have little
  • The Sissu waterfall often freezes in peak winter
  • Wide open snowfields for photos and snow play
  • The drive through the Atal Tunnel itself

Sissu in December, January and February

December: snow builds up, very cold mornings, good snow cover by month end.

January: coldest month, heavy snow likely, frozen waterfall common.

February: still snowy, slightly longer days, good month for photos.

Atal Tunnel and Road Status in Winter

The Atal Tunnel keeps Sissu reachable in winter, but the approach roads can close for a day or more after heavy snowfall or for snow clearance. Local police may also limit vehicle movement beyond Solang on some days.

How we handle it: your driver checks the road status every morning. If the tunnel road is closed, we switch to Solang Valley or another open snow point and try Sissu on the next clear day.

Planning Sissu from Manali

Sissu is a day trip from Manali (roughly 1–1.5 hours each way when the road is clear)

  • Start early and return before dark, when roads refreeze

Stay in Manali, not in Lahaul, in peak winter unless you are prepared for extreme cold

What to Pack for Sissu in Winter

  • Heavy thermals, down jacket, gloves, woollen cap and socks
  • Waterproof shoes or snow boots
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Snacks and water (few shops are open in peak winter)
