Spiti in Winter: Route, Snow, Cold & Safety Guide

Spiti in winter is a frozen high-altitude desert: white villages, frozen streams and very few tourists. It is also the toughest trip in Himachal, so it needs the right route, the right vehicle and proper preparation.

Which Route is Open in Winter

In winter, the Manali side (via Kunzum Pass) is closed. Spiti is reached from the Shimla side through Kinnaur: Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Reckong Peo/Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza. This road usually stays open, but heavy snow can close stretches for a day or more.

How Cold is Spiti in Winter

Very cold. Nights at Kaza can drop to around -20°C or lower in January, and days often stay below freezing. Water pipes freeze, so many homestays use stored water and bukharis (wood stoves) for heat.

Winter Spiti Month by Month

December: cold, snow possible, roads mostly open.

January: coldest, most snow, hardest month.

February: still deep winter, slightly longer days.

March: winter ends slowly, some roads still affected by snow.

Plan it Safely

Go slow: spend a night at Kalpa or Nako before Kaza to adjust to the altitude

Use a 4x4 or snow-ready vehicle with a driver who has done winter Spiti

  • Keep 1–2 buffer days for road closures

Carry medicines for cold and altitude, and tell us about any health condition before booking

  • Mobile network is limited; BSNL and Jio work in some villages

What to Pack

Heavy down jacket, two thermal layers, fleece, snow boots, woollen socks, gloves, cap, balaclava, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, a power bank, and a personal medicine kit.
