Kashmir or Himachal is the most common question we get from families planning their first hill holiday. Both are beautiful, both have snow in winter, and both can be done in 5 to 7 nights. The right choice depends on what kind of trip you want, how you will travel and your budget.
Choose Kashmir if you want lakes, houseboats, wide meadows and a relaxed holiday in one valley; it is the better pick for a honeymoon and for reliable snow in Gulmarg. Choose Himachal if you want variety, from colonial Shimla to adventure in Manali, quiet villages like Jibhi and the high desert of Spiti, and an easy road trip from Delhi or Chandigarh. Himachal packages start a little lower, from about ₹8,000 per person, against about ₹10,000 for Kashmir.

Cost
Both trips cost similar money once travel is added. Kashmir needs a flight to Srinagar for most people, while Himachal can be done entirely by road from Delhi or Chandigarh. That is why budget travellers and big families often pick Himachal. A 5 night Shimla Manali trip by private cab starts at about ₹14,000 per person; a 5 night Kashmir trip starts at about ₹18,000 per person.
Best Time to Visit
Kashmir is best from April to June for tulips and green meadows, September to November for autumn colours, and December to February for snow. Himachal is best from March to June for pleasant weather, October to November for clear mountain views, and December to February for snow. In both, July and August bring rain and some road delays.
For a Honeymoon
Kashmir wins for romance: a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, a sunset shikara ride and the quiet of Pahalgam are hard to beat. Himachal is better if you want variety and a lower budget, and our Manali, Jibhi and Shimla honeymoon packages already include room decoration, a cake and a candle-light dinner in the price.
For Families
Himachal is easier with kids and parents. You can stop anywhere on the road, there are many hotel choices and there is no flight to catch. Kashmir also works well for families if you stay longer in fewer places and keep the daily drives short.
For Snow
For deep snow in January and February, Gulmarg in Kashmir is the most reliable. In Himachal, Kufri near Shimla and Solang Valley and Sissu near Manali usually have snow from late December to February, though Shimla town itself may not.
Our Suggestion
First hill trip with family: Shimla and Manali, 5 to 6 nights.
Honeymoon: Kashmir with a houseboat night, 5 to 6 nights.
Friends or offbeat: Manali, Kasol and Jibhi, or Spiti Valley.
