Manali in December and January is what most people picture when they think of a snow holiday in India: white slopes at Solang Valley, snow on the Atal Tunnel road, cosy hotel rooms and hot chai by the fire. But winter in the mountains also means cold nights, short days and the odd road closure. This guide covers the weather, the snow, what to pack and how to plan a winter trip that goes smoothly.
Does Manali Get Snow in December and January
Snow in Manali town itself is not guaranteed. The town gets a few snowfalls in most winters, usually from late December to February. Higher places nearby, such as Solang Valley, Gulaba and the Sissu side of the Atal Tunnel, usually have snow through this period, so almost every winter visitor gets to see and play in snow.
January is generally the coldest month and often the snowiest. Late December brings the Christmas and New Year crowds.
Manali Weather in Winter
Days in Manali are cool and often sunny, around 5 to 12°C. Nights drop to around zero or below, and colder after snowfall. Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel side are colder still. Hotels provide heaters, and most of our winter stays have heating or room heaters available.
Best Places for Snow Near Manali
Solang Valley: snow play, skiing lessons and the ropeway, about 14 km from Manali
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: snow views and waterfalls on the Lahaul side
- Gulaba: snow on the old Rohtang road, when open
- Kufri and Narkanda: snow points near Shimla on the way to Manali
Is Rohtang Pass Open in Winter
No. Rohtang Pass is usually closed to tourists through the winter because of heavy snow. The Atal Tunnel has made the Lahaul side reachable for most of the year, so Sissu has become the main winter snow trip. Roads can still close for a day after heavy snowfall, and the police may stop vehicles at Solang or the tunnel. We keep spare time in the plan for this.
Things to pack for Manali in winter
- Warm jacket rated for below zero
- Thermal inner wear for every day
- Woollen cap, gloves and muffler
- Waterproof shoes with good grip
- Two pairs of warm socks per day
- Sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow glare
- Lip balm and moisturiser
- Basic medicines for cold and cough
Snow boots and full snow suits can be rented at Solang and on the Atal Tunnel side for a small fee.
Travel Tips for a Winter Trip
Book early for Christmas and New Year week, because hotels and Volvo seats sell out. Start day trips early, since the light goes by 5 pm. Use the local snow-point vehicles where private cabs are not allowed. Keep children and older parents warm and avoid long hours in the snow. If you fly to Chandigarh, check the weather a day before; fog can delay early morning flights in north India in December and January.
How Many Days Do You Need
Three nights in Manali is enough for Solang, the Atal Tunnel and the town. If you add Shimla and Kufri, plan five nights in total. For a quieter winter, add a night in Jibhi or Kasol.
